CARDI B SPEAKS OUT!” After Tyla faced backlash over her heritage and VMA win, Cardi B shares a powerful message of support. However, her words seemed heavy.

Cardi B Defends Tyla Amid Relentless Online Backlash: “It’s Straight-Up Disrespectful”
Cardi B is once again standing up for Tyla, the South African sensation, as she faces another wave of online hate and criticism.
The Grammy-winning rapper didn’t hold back during a recent late-night X Spaces (formerly Twitter Spaces) livestream, where she called out the internet’s toxic obsession with tearing down artists—using Tyla as a prime example.

“Look at Tyla,” Cardi B said passionately. “People have been dragging the hell out of her, and the girl doesn’t even address or talk about anything.”
She continued, expressing her frustration at the constant negativity: “It’s like the only way people like celebrities these days is if you don’t say anything at all.”
Cardi admitted she’s baffled as to why Tyla has become the latest target, but she’s noticed the relentless scrutiny every time she scrolls through TikTok. “Every single time I scroll down on my TikTok, there’s a video of her and people are talking sht, and it’s like, goddamn, what do you want her to fing do? Cut her f*ing veins?”
The latest round of criticism against Tyla was sparked by a TikTok creator who claimed that the rising star hasn’t “quite connected with the US audience,” and that her “We Wanna Party” mixtape hasn’t achieved the numbers expected despite heavy marketing.
Tyla, often dubbed the “popiano” princess, has also faced intense scrutiny over her racial identity. Earlier this year, during an interview on “The Breakfast Club Show” with Charlamagne tha God, she was asked to clarify her use of the term “coloured”—a term that, while normal in South Africa for people of mixed-race heritage, is considered a slur in the US. This cultural misunderstanding reignited debates about her identity and led some American netizens to question why her music hasn’t charted higher, blaming a lack of support from the Black American audience.
Addressing the controversy in an interview with “Variety,” the 23-year-old Grammy winner stated, “I don’t expect to be identified as coloured outside of South Africa by anyone not comfortable doing so because I understand the weight of that word outside my country. But to close this conversation, I’m both coloured in South Africa and a black woman.”
This isn’t the first time Cardi B has come to Tyla’s defense. Last year, after Tyla was criticized for asking Lil Nas X to hold her VMA trophy during her acceptance speech, Cardi B called out the backlash as bullying. Tyla was unfairly labeled “an entitled African” and “uppity,” with even US rapper Joe Budden weighing in.

Cardi B shut down the criticism, pointing out that the VMA trophy is heavy and Tyla’s request was taken out of context. “Y’all criticize so much that you’re not even realizing you’re bullying this girl,” she said, adding that cultural differences play a huge role in how African and Caribbean women’s confidence is perceived.
Through it all, Cardi B’s message remains clear: the internet’s relentless negativity and “straight-up disrespect” toward artists like Tyla needs to stop.
